Brookelyn Peterson DPH-4 student


  • Interest began in high school

  • Worked in a retail pharmacy to gain knowledge and experience

  • APPE RT residency track (6/8 APPE at same site)

  • Interests in critical care, acute care, and critical medicine

  • In pharmacy school was involved in: WSPS, Student senate president


Why pick the APPE RT?

  • Has projects similar to residency

  • Vast opportunities

  • Learn what residency will be like

  • Experience with research

  • Better focus on learning since system and people remain the same


Favorite project/opportunity 

  • Working in medical and surgical ICU

  • Work with residents with different levels of intensity

  • Ability to give input in way a pharmacist would 


What is rounding like

  • On acute care pulmonary did sit down rounds 

  • ICU do bedside rounds room to room

  • Work through body systems with teams


APPE RT process

  • SSM was main system

  • Fish hatchery clinic outpatient for clinical and ambulatory 

  • Was very independent running meetings doing recommendations and changes 

  • Currently doing pharmacy school with Karen - academic. 

Choosing APPE

  • Mimic residency interview, application, recommendation letter, letter of intent to benefit their program, offer interview, match process

  • Rank your programs and they rank you 

Regular APPE

  • Get assigned to hub in madison, milwaukee, up north, etc. after ranking programs

  • Pick locations for 4 locations and electives anywhere 


  • FIG and pre pharm club helps prepare for applying to pharmacy school

  • Meet with speakers  - approach them and ask questions or email them 

Highlights of UW 

  • Undergrad here 2 year fast track 

  • Was in FIG 

  • Only applied to UW Madison school of pharmacy

  • Was able to meet faculty ahead of time

  • Involvement in organizations, in leadership positions


Challenges to pharmacy school

  • Rigorous program

  • Overwhelming to learn information but manageable 

  • Knowledge gained has set up success in fourth year

  • Applying to residency - being from UW madison has impact in good way 


Hospital

  • Get into hospital rotation - picked areas she didn't think she wanted to be in

  • Loves adrenaline and role of pharmacy 

  • Putting meds to give during code 

  • Use experiences in APPE to make decision on where to be
