Pharmacist at UW, graduated from UW

Took a lot of chemistry classes during undergrad but didn’t want to teach, decided to pursue pharmacy. Graduated with a BS in pharmacy before the PharmD program was implemented.

Interned after BS degree (9 months)

Liked hospital pharmacy (was a tech during school)

Only 2 rotations, hospital and retail. Decided retail wasn’t for her.

Hospital pharmacy at UW is different than other places. Decentralized pharmacists - pharmacist on inpatient units floors for each specific area. Medication history, discharge counseling, round with the doctor teams, work with students because a learning institute.

2015 decided to change from Cardiac to Nuclear (.5 position) Pharmacy

What is Nuclear Pharmacy?

Stress tests for example. Medication prepared tagged with radiopharmaceuticals, so they can track where it is going like looking for ischemia.

Bone scan medication to see a fracture for rowers.

Overall, diagnosis. Some therapy uses such as iodine or thyroid issues.

Had to take 200hr of classroom, 500hr experiential to switch to this career path.

Radiation safety committee has to vote on considering if she is an authorized nuclear pharmacist.

Start early! 6:30am. They have to prepare everything. Drugs have short half lives.

Nuclear pharmacy will keep growing, new methods, scanning, etc
