Why pharmacy?

  • Ed shadowed a pharmacist in high school and through that experience found three main reasons he loved the profession:

  1. Knowledgeable

  2. Well Respected

  3. Accessible

  • These three attributes help make a POSITIVE IMPACT

How do I know if pharmacy is for me?

  • Think about your interests, what kind of skill set you’d like to have in the future, and the job market (more to come about this later)

  • Many routes you can follow all by getting one degree: PharmD

Miranda’s project:

Miranda is a current pharmacy student who is working on a project with Ed that is exploring the experiences and opinions of various types of pharmacists around the Madison area. Here are some brief summaries of her work:

Ambulatory Care:

Maria Wopat (PharmD, BCACP, TTS)

  • See patients in the clinic

  • Manage chronic disease states

  • Order meds and review labs

What she likes about her job?

  • Teaching

  • The veterans (she works at the V.A. Hospital)

Advice for pre-pharmacy students:

  • Volunteer!

Ambulatory care/academia

Barry Gidal, PharmD

  • Works at the V.A. epilepsy clinic one day per week

  • Teaches at the school of pharmacy

  • Research

Advice?

  • If you want to be a clinical pharmacist, do a residency!

  • Leadership/management focus

  • Creates successful environment for pharmacists at UW

Pharmaceutical Industry-Medical Liason

Susie Moroney, PharmD

  • Researches/develops new medications. Sees them all the way to market.

What does she like about her job?

  • Variability, can work from home and travel

  • Medical educator

Home Health Care

Dr. Trisha Seys Ranola, PharmD

  • Work in a team to give care to a person with chronic disease in their home

  • Manages their medications, make sure they get the best care they need

Global Health Fellow

Dr. Laurel Legenza, PharmD fellow

  • Researches and works on projects to improve health systems

  • Work with a health team to manage antibiotics

What she likes about her job?

  • Seeing change!

Her advice:

  • Persistance

What does Ed do?

  • Ambulatory Care at the V.A. Hospital

  • Meet with patients in the clinic to oversee their chronic conditions

  • Prescribe meds

  • Order lab values

  • Place referrals

  • Determine follow-up appointments

Do you have to do a residency to get a job in pharmacy?

  • Nope

How’s the job market?

  • Great market

  • Thousands of additional pharmacists employed yearly

  • Aging baby boomer population→ needs pharmacists to help care for them
