Health System Pharmacy

Pharmacy administration is a section of the field options in hospital pharmacy

Serves both outpatient and inpatient populations

Inpatient + Outpatient = Health System Pharmacy

Ex: UW-Health

What is UW-Health?

Level 1 trauma center, consisting of multiple hospitals and a large network of clinics

Their main focus is serving the patients, which they can do through an integrated pharmacy care delivery system

It combines education, research, business infrastructure, and information technology

Some of the services they provide are: health plan and payer systems, acute care

services, ambulatory care programs, home care service, retail and specialty services,

partnerships and joint ventures

What is a health system pharmacist?

  • Clinical-Staff Pharmacists

  • Inpatient acute care pharmacy

  • Oncology pharmacist, neurology pharmacist, etc.

  • Outpatient ambulatory care pharmacy

  • Making sure meds are affordable, accessible, to patients outside the hospital

  • Inpatient central pharmacy

  • Outpatient retail pharmacy

  • Drug Distribution pharmacist

  • Central operations

  • Supply chain pharmacist

  • Purchase medications

  • Financial aspect of pharmacy

  • Informatics pharmacist

  • Manage electronic health records (patient charts)

  • Automation (robotic medication picker, increased efficiency)

Inpatient pharmacist roles

  • Healthcare team prescribes an antibiotic to a patient with a history of transplant (immunosuppressed)

  • Decentral pharmacist (Know patient, then check order)

  • Correct antibiotic and dosage

  • Profile review of patient

  • Allergies, appropriateness

  • Verify order and send to central pharmacy to be filled

  • Central Pharmacist (receive order, then review)

  • Receive order and check appropriateness

  • Make sure antibiotic is prepared accurately

Health System Pharmacy Leadership

Chain of leaders overseeing individual departments of the hospital

Pharmacy coordinator Roles

-Detailed clinical role

-Oversees team of physicians and pharmacists to make sure all patients are receiving appropriate medications

-Keep up to date with most recent medication guidelines, communicating them to physicians so they can prescribe the most effective therapies

Pharmacy Manager Roles

-Day to day roles

-Ensure team is following through with their expectations

-Quality control, assess outcomes and make sure they follow the goals of the corporation

-Help with employee relations issues

Pharmacy Director Roles

-Manager of the managers

-Make sure goals are accomplished

  • Interact with lots of people

  • Meetings, phone calls, conference calls, emails

  • National pharmacy leadership committees and advisory roles
