Veterinary Pharmacy
UW Veterinary Hospital
Consultations with Veterinarians , ex: Forms; Site of action? What medication is the animal on?
Veterinary pharmacists are specialized in veterinary medicine, but not many further specializations past that
Rely on community pharmacists to help with patient financial needs: Pet insurance is reimbursement unlike Human health insurance
Make kits for families to make medication application easier
How has your environment changed with COVID?
Animals get wiped down prior, cats can get covid animals can carry it
Can’t interact with patients as much for demos
Ex: Sileo; causes sedation, dangerous if operated wrong
Most of school training on human medication:
Cardiology in dogs and cats
Diabetes in Cats and Dogs (Dogs more likely type 1 , cats type 2)
Compounding: Less money going into drug development for animals, so human formulations are translated into animal medications, Different flavors, Mix drug powders with gelatin
Research:
Vet pharmacists can do research
Research is more behind on more unique animals
General Comments
Some vets are at Henry Vilas Zoo regularly
Collaborating with non-Vet pharmacists may be complicated if they are unfamiliar with animal dosages, and for example refuse to dispense medication.
Some nervous animals get drugs to calm them down
Different animals have different physiology to account for
HIPAA does not apply, follow hospital policies
